Exterior paint is only as good as the weather it goes on in. Paint that is applied too cold, too wet or in blazing sun can look fine for a while and then peel, blister or fade early. In Toronto, that makes timing as important as the paint itself. Here is how to plan an exterior painting job around the weather.
Every exterior paint lists a minimum application temperature on the label. For many exterior paints it is around 10°C, for both the air and the surface. Some newer formulas are made for cooler weather and go lower. What matters is not just the temperature while the crew is painting, but the hours after, while the paint is drying.
In spring and fall, Toronto days can be warm while nights drop close to freezing. Cold nights slow drying, and evening dew can land on paint that is not yet dry, leaving streaks or a sticky surface. Good crews start after the morning dew has burned off and stop early enough for the paint to dry before evening.
Surfaces must be dry before painting, and paint needs several dry hours afterwards, often more in cool or humid weather. Siding that got soaked the day before may need time to dry out. Very humid days slow drying too.
Hot summer days bring their own problems. Paint applied in direct, strong sun on a hot wall can dry too fast, showing lap marks and bonding less well. Painters often follow the shade around the house: the west side in the morning, the east side in the afternoon.
The best weeks book up first. Getting your exterior estimate done in late winter or early spring gives you the widest choice of dates.
Even with good planning, Toronto weather changes. Ask your painter how rain days are handled: a good contractor reschedules rather than painting on a wet surface, and keeps you informed. On a combined interior and exterior job, crews can work inside on wet days.
Washing, scraping, sanding, caulking and priming take most of the time on an exterior job. Washing needs drying time, and primer has its own temperature limits. A realistic schedule includes all of it, not just the painting days.
If your home is in one of Toronto's Heritage Conservation Districts, check the district guidelines before changing exterior colours or materials. Townhouse complexes and condo corporations often have their own rules for exterior colours, too. A quick check before you choose colours avoids surprises later.
It depends on the surface, the prep, the paint and how much sun and weather each side of the house gets. South- and west-facing walls usually fade and wear first. Good prep, quality exterior paint and applying it in the right conditions are what give a paint job its full life. Walk around the house each spring and look for peeling, cracked caulking and bare wood, so small repairs happen before they become big ones.

Many exterior paints need about 10°C or warmer for the air and the surface, though some newer formulas allow lower temperatures. Always follow the product label and consider overnight lows.

The surface needs to be dry. That can take a few hours on a sunny day or longer for soaked siding in cool weather.
