Window frames take more weather than any other part of a house: sun on the sills, rain in the corners and ice in the winter. Lumen Painting offers exterior window frame painting in Toronto and the GTA for wood and aluminum frames, sills, brick moulding and shutters, as its own job or with a full exterior repaint.
We clean, scrape, repair, caulk and prime before painting, so the frames are protected as well as refreshed. The estimate is free, and the work is covered by a written workmanship warranty.
What is included
- Wood window frames, sashes and sills
- Aluminum window frames and capping
- Brick moulding and exterior casings
- Shutters and decorative trim around windows
- Front doors, storm doors and their frames
- Scraping and sanding of peeling paint

How we do it
- Inspect each window
We check every frame for peeling, rot, failed caulking and how the glass is sealed.
- Clean and scrape
Dirt and loose paint are removed; aluminum is cleaned and deglossed.
- Repair and caulk
Small wood repairs, new caulking at joints and around the frame to keep water out.
- Prime
Primer for bare wood or metal so the finish coats bond and last.
- Paint and clean the glass
Finish coats with clean lines on the glass edge, then the glass is cleaned of masking and paint.
Wood frames on older Toronto homes
Many older houses in Toronto still have original wood windows or wood brick moulding. Once the paint fails, water gets into the wood and rot starts in the sills and lower corners. Scraping, small repairs, fresh caulking and paint protect the wood and can add years before replacement is needed.
Painting aluminum window frames
Aluminum frames and capping on 1970s and 1980s homes often look chalky and faded. They can be painted, as long as they are cleaned, deglossed and primed with a product that bonds to metal. It is a cost-effective way to change the trim colour of a house without replacing the windows.
Frames inside and out
The inside of your frames needs interior products and is part of our door and window frame painting service. For the rest of the outside of the house, see exterior painting.
What affects the price
- Number and size of windows
- Frames are usually priced per window, with large bay and picture windows taking longer.
- Material
- Wood and aluminum need different cleaning and primers.
- Condition
- Peeling paint, rot and failed caulking add repair time.
- Height
- Second- and third-storey windows need ladders or staging.
- Divided lites
- Windows with many small panes take much longer to cut in neatly.
Every quote is free, written and based on a visit, so you know the full price before any work starts.
Exterior Window Frame Painting questions
Can you paint aluminum window frames?
Yes. We clean and degloss the aluminum and use a primer that bonds to metal before the finish coats.
Can you paint vinyl windows?
Sometimes. Vinyl needs paints made for vinyl, and dark colours can make it warp in the sun. We check your windows and tell you what will work.
Do you fix rotten window sills?
We make small wood repairs as part of prep. Badly rotted sills or frames may need a carpenter, and we will tell you at the estimate.
Will you get paint on the glass?
We cut in carefully along the glass and clean off any masking residue or paint marks when we finish.
Can I book just the windows?
Yes. Window frames can be painted on their own or as part of a full exterior job.
